Project D3: Issues in Carbon Accounting

NB: The precise nature of this project is still being discussed within the CRC. The intent is to maintain a flexible component of CRC resources in order to respond to issues arising in carbon accounting.

Issues that may arise include:

storage of carbon in oil mallee plantings
storage of carbon in saltbush plantings, or
assessment of particular biofuel proposals.

The project's goal is to fill the gap between anticipated strategic/applied research and contract consultancy and research. It will have a small steering committee to assist the Project Leaders.

Objectives

To respond quickly to current and emerging issues in greenhouse accounting by preparing and coordinating initial scoping and feasibility studies
To coordinate the activities of the wider CRC and external groups in achieving these studies
To initiate further research on issues arising from the studies.

Strategy

A small steering committee will assess options for activities in this project and assist the Project Leaders in resourcing them. External funding will be sought in many cases.

Outputs

Issues Papers (hardcopy and online) and similar material for rapid dissemination of findings

Outcomes

A significant rapid response capacity to assess emerging greenhouse accounting issues
Improved input into ongoing research priorities both within the CRC and elsewhere
Improved input into negotiations and good practice guidelines

Helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the land through excellence in science
