Businesses are experiencing increasing demands to measure
and manage greenhouse gas emissions. Market-based approaches (such as
emissions trading) are increasingly being used as effective management
tools. But how are businesses in the USA and Australia building capability
to manage emissions and utilize market-based approaches? Australia, along
with the USA, has decided not to ratify the Kyoto Protocol and to pursue
other approaches to greenhouse gas reduction. With a Research Grant from the Cooperative
Research Centre for Greenhouse Accounting, five 'Industry Greenhouse
Roundtables on Capacity Building and Market-based Approaches' were conducted
in the USA during 2002 - 2003. These compliment five industry Roundtables
that were held in Australia during 2001. The US Roundtables were carried
out while the researcher, Carrie Sonneborn was an intern at the US National
Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The goal of the Roundtables is to give industry the opportunity
to explore how they would prepare for a carbon - constrained future using
market-based approaches such as emissions trading. These insights will
feed into the development of a practical framework and model for industry
greenhouse response. |
