Course Participants, June 2002

The CRC for Greenhouse Accounting is presenting a three day short course on managing carbon in agricultural production systems, for agricultural managers and the wider community. The principal aim is to provide insight into current best-practice land management strategies for maximising carbon storage potential in agricultural production systems, in the context of national and international carbon trading considerations.

The course is focused around the 2002 CRC technical publication Range-ASSESS: A Spatial Framework for Analysis of Potential for Carbon Sequestration in Rangelands, and incorporates hands-on practical sessions using this management support tool.

Topics to be addressed include :

  • Understanding carbon cycling in agricultural systems
  • Managing grazing land and cropland for carbon storage
  • Carbon impacts of revegetation and afforestation
  • Risk and uncertainty in managing for carbon
  • Scenario assessment using Range-ASSESS
  • Developing Good Practice Guidelines for carbon management

The course will be presented by senior Carbon Management experts from the Bureau of Rural Sciences, Queensland Department of Natural Resources & Mines, Queensland Department of Primary Industries, CSIRO, the Australian National University, and others.

Managing Carbon in Agricultural Systems will be of interest to land managers, natural resource managers, consultants with an interest in this area, and related public and private sector industries.

Please note that registrations are strictly limited

The CRC for Greenhouse Accounting, jointly with the National Centre for Development Studies at the Australian National University, is presenting a four day short course on global change and earth systems for those working in natural resource management, natural resource policy areas, and the wider community.

The principal aim in the course is to provide participants with an understanding of the complex components of global change and their interactions, for input to policy development for global change impact mitigation and adaptation. Global change includes changes in atmospheric composition, climate change, ozone depletion, human population growth, increased global nitrogen deposition, changes in land cover and land use, and increases in the rate of species extinctions.

The course focuses around a series of recent international assessment reports, including those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations Environment Program and the Ozone Assessment. It will develop participants' understanding of the status of the world's natural resources, the global change pressures acting on them, and the policy responses at international, national and local levels. The course will be of interest to natural resource managers, natural resource policymakers, consultants with an interest in this area, and related public and private sector industries.

Global Change and Earth Systems will be presented by Dr Habiba Gitay, who has extensive experience as an author in the recent IPCC reports, and is currently leading a report on Biodiversity and Climate Change; and Dr Janette Lindesay, an authority on climate variability and change.

Numbers are strictly limited.

Course Dates: 16-19 July 2002
Venue: Australian National University, Canberra
Registration fee: $800 (ex GST) - includes all course materials, morning/afternoon teas; student rates available on request.
