Estimates Of Australia’s Greenhouse Emissions
and Sinks an Important Milestone
The release today of results from Australia’s
National
Carbon Accounting System is an important milestone in better
understanding the sources of greenhouse gases and sinks from Australia’s
land use change and forestry activities’, said Dr Chris Mitchell
CEO of the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Accounting.
The National Carbon Accounting System provides estimates
of Australia’s carbon dioxide emissions from changes in land
use and from forestry activities.
‘Australia’s National Carbon Accounting
System is a world-leading system that provides for the first time
estimates of its greenhouse gas emissions (and sinks) from the land
using a single consistent approach.’
The National Carbon Accounting System is an operational
system designed to be in-line with international requirements for
carbon accounting.
‘The release of these figures shows that it
is possible to track greenhouse gas emissions
(and sinks) from forests and land systems across a continent in
a way that is consistent
with international agreements on how carbon accounting should be
done’, commented
Dr Mitchell.
‘The development of this system is only possible
because Australia has a strong underlying
science base in relevant disciplines. The Australian
Greenhouse Office used the expertise of
scientists from universities, State Government Departments and Commonwealth
science
agencies to make the National Carbon Accounting System a reality.’
The CRC for Greenhouse Accounting is able to strengthen
this science by bringing together scientists from different universities
and government agencies.
The CRC’s research will lead to improvements
in the monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions (and sinks) from the
land and ensure that Australia’s estimates of emissions
continue to be based on the best available science.
